What sounds do alpacas make?
Alpacas are known as calm and quiet animals, but they do communicate with each other through various sounds. These sounds provide insight into their mood, social relationships, and well-being. By listening carefully, you will better understand alpacas.
The soft humming
The most common sound in alpacas is a soft humming sound, often described as humming.
Alpacas make this sound:
- when they feel relaxed
- in social contact with peers
- between mother and cria
- while eating or resting
This sound is usually not a sign of stress, but rather of calm and connectedness.
Alarm sounds in case of unrest
When alpacas feel threatened or insecure, they can make a short, sharp sound. This serves as
warning for the rest of the herd.
Typical situations:
-
an unknown animal or sound
-
sudden movements
-
change in their environment
This alarm sound ensures that the herd becomes more alert and stays together.
Spitting and associated sounds
Spitting is often misunderstood. Alpacas rarely spit at people and mainly use this behavior among themselves.
The spitting is sometimes accompanied by:
-
a grumbling or bubbling sound
-
body language such as laying ears flat
This usually happens with:
-
quarrel over food
-
dominance within the herd
Sounds between mother and cria
Mothers and their young communicate intensely through soft sounds.
These sounds:
-
help with recognition
-
provide tranquility to the cria
-
strengthen the bond between mother and young
A cria can also make a calling sound when it is looking for its mother.
Sounds that the stallion makes during reproduction (orgelen)
During reproduction, a stallion makes a long-lasting, soft humming sound, also called orgelen. This sound:
-
has a calming effect on the female
-
helps with the reproductive process
-
is unique to alpacas
Playing occurs exclusively in this context and differs clearly from other sounds.
